Foundation and Early Years
The journey toward the establishment of the Curious Children Child Care Center began in 2018, spearheaded by Lisa Atherley a member of the South Orange-Vailsburg United Methodist Church congregation with a passion for early childhood development, and a passion to make a difference in the lives of children in the community. Lisa, with the strong support of Winston Kennedy, the Chairman of the Administrative Councill, and a small group of dedicated parishioners including the then Pastor, Molege Desir, advocated to open the center with one classroom in the lower level of the Church, utilizing the space previously dedicated to fellowship after Worship Service.
The Center’s mission would be two-fold: to provide a nurturing and stimulating learning environment where young children could develop their cognitive, social, and emotional skills through play and exploration and to provide a caring environment where the community could feel confident that their children were receiving the best after-care possible while they were at work.
The Center forged a relationship with the South Orange-Maplewood School District which was seeking to increase the number of placements and would fund the education of eligible children in the school district, drawing upon the state’s and district’s mandate that all children in New Jersey are entitled to a quality education.
On January 3, 2022, the Center opened with 2 students.
Growth and Development
Recognizing the increasing demand for quality child care services, in 2023, Lisa and her team expanded the facility, adding a new classroom and outdoor play area. This expansion allowed the center to accommodate more children and offer a wider range of programs, including after care.
During the 2023/24 school year, the Center enrolled 19 students.
In the interim, the center also began to build partnerships with the community, enhancing its curriculum and providing additional resources for the children.
Innovation and Excellence
Even in its infancy, Curious Children Child Care Center has established itself as a model in early childhood education in the county. The center introduced a variety of innovative programs, such as a nature-based learning initiative, sports and reading and music appreciation programs. These programs are designed to cater to the diverse needs and interests of the children and to prepare them for success in a global society.
Community Engagement
Community involvement has always been important to Curious Children Child Care Center. In the coming years, the center looks forward to hosting events that foster a stronger sense of community amongst families.
Present Day
Today, the Curious Children Child Care Center continues to thrive. The center remains dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for all children. Under the leadership of its current director, Sylma Brown and the dedicated teachers, the center continues to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of families and the advancements in early childhood education.
As the Curious Children Child Care Center looks to the future, it remains committed to its founding principles of curiosity, exploration, and lifelong learning. With a strong foundation and a clear vision, the center is poised to continue making a positive impact on the lives of young children and their families in the community for many years.
